Poem 7

Do wild horses watch the stars
Like the Ancient Equus Nebula
Who rides the night and seeks refuge
In the heavens

Does The Hunter alert their feet
Keeping them on guard forever
In edgy protection
Safe from the Night Dog

Do wild stallions rear up
To touch moonlight
And dream, like Pegasus
To touch the sun

Do the Pleiades counsel
The wild mare
So she can lead the herd
And show the way

Do the hooves of Centaurus
Long to be free
Or does his hand whisper wisdom and kindness
And nurture an eternal bond

Do wild horses watch the stars
Carefully… silently…for guidance
Then suddenly, with muffled percussion
Take flight into the night mist.

"Riding the Night"
Sandy Radke from Bellingen, NSW, acquired two foals from the Guy Fawkes
River National Park. She had never owned a horse before but the experience
of raising these foals has been an absolute pleasure.
On a full-moon night in April 2005 she was thinking about her two foals
when she heard the thumping of them racing around their paddock right next
to the house, however she could not see them because the mist was so thick.
This inspired Sandy to compose the above poem.
