Working with Brumbies
5 A number of yearling brumbies at feed time.
5 For the sanctuary's trail rides, brumbies are used. This page contains a number of yearling brumbies which 5 are being trained. These have been bred from domesticated brumby mares, the sire being a brumby stallion, which in this particular season, uninvitedly jumped the fence into the mare's paddock and offered his services free of charge. Shown above is Suzy Forwood working with one youngser.
The riding brumbies are usually halter-broken at about 1year old, and saddle work starts between 2 to 3 years.

5 Shown above is 'Snip'. Snip has been halter trained previously. With domesticated brumby mares being used, the progeny usually turn out a little less wild than those out in the wild.

5 Another yearling brumby.
5 Some brumby yearlings can become thin at times, however this struggle which some go through is one of the foundations for the extra toughness which brumbies possess.

5 Some of the brumby yearlings shown on this page may look a little awkward in shape, but they will all eventually fill out and come into proportion as this five year old gelding is.
3 Holding pens.

5 This 'half brumby' is the result of putting a draft horse over a brumby mare to produce a larger horse for the trail riding.
